Mather at the Archives

Dr. Timothy James and USCB’s archivist intern Elizabeth Peck traveled to Columbia, South Carolina to locate and examine a specific Mather school document that had been located in a digital archive online. The document being searched for is a teacher’s report, they wanted to see it in person. When they arrived, they did not find the document, but found instead the Mather School’s applications to be a high school in Beaufort county, South Carolina. Dr. James and Ms. Peck found several years of high school applications for the Mather School, as well as other documents that contribute to the narrative of what education was like in Beaufort county, South Carolina in the early twentieth century.
